Docusate

What is Docusate and why is it prescribed?
Docusate is a stool softener that promotes easy bowel movements without straining. It softens the stool by mixing in fat and water. Docusate is helpful for people who have had recent rectal surgery, people with heart problems, high blood pressure, hemorrhoids, or hernias, and women who have just had babies. Docusate is for short-term relief only, unless your doctor directs otherwise. It usually takes a day or two for the drug to achieve its laxative effect. Some people may need to wait 4 or 5 days.

How should you take Docusate?
Follow your doctors directions for taking Docusate. To conceal the drug's bitter taste, take Docusate liquid in half a glass of milk or fruit juice. It can be given in infant formula. The proper dosage of this medication may also be added to a retention or flushing enema. Take Docusate only as needed. Store Docusate at room temperature. Keep from freezing.

Are there any Docusate side effects?
Docusate side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Docusate side effects are unlikely. The main ones reported are bitter taste, throat irritation, and nausea. Rash has occurred.
