What is Fosfomycin and why is it prescribed?
Fosfomycin is an antibiotic used to treat bladder infections in women. You need take only one dose of Fosfomycin. Additional doses won't speed a cure, but will make side effects more likely. If your symptoms do not improve in 2 to 3 days, contact your physician.

How should you take Fosfomycin?
Follow your doctors directions for taking Fosfomycin. Fosfomycin is packaged in a sachet, which contains granules of the drug. Open the sachet and pour the contents in 3 or 4 ounces (half a cup) of cold water, stir to dissolve, and drink immediately. Do not use hot water. Do not take the drug in its dry form. The solution can be taken with or without food. Only one dose is needed. Store Fosfomycin at room temperature.

Are there any Fosfomycin side effects?
Fosfomycin side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. More common Fosfomycin side effects may include diarrhea, headache, nausea, and vaginal inflammation. Less common Fosfomycin side effects may include dizziness, indigestion, and weakness.

What are the possible food and drug interactions when taking Fosfomycin?
If Fosfomycin is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Be sure to inform your doctor of all the prescription and over the counter medications you are taking. Check with your doctor before combining Fosfomycin with Reglan, a drug that speeds digestion. Reglan and similar drugs will reduce Fosfomycin's effectiveness.

Are there any special warnings about Fosfomycin?
Call your doctor if symptoms fail to improve within 2 to 3 days. You may need a different prescription.
