Miralax

What is Miralax and why is it prescribed?
Miralax is a remedy for constipation. It works by retaining water in the stool, softening it and increasing the frequency of bowel movements. It may take up to 2 to 4 days to work. Unless your doctor directs otherwise, do not use Miralax for more than 2 weeks. Sustained, frequent, or excessive use can upset the body's chemical balance, and can lead to dependence on laxatives.

How should you take Miralax?
Follow your doctors directions for taking Miralax. Dissolve 1 capful or packet of Miralax powder (17 grams) in 8 ounces of water, juice, soda, coffee, or tea. If you miss a dose take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at once. Store Miralax at room temperature.

Are there any Miralax side effects?
Miralax side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Miralax side effects may include bloating, cramps, gas, and nausea. High doses may cause diarrhea and excessive frequency.

What are the possible food and drug interactions when taking Miralax?
If Miralax is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Be sure to inform your doctor of all the prescription and over the counter medications you are taking. No interactions have been reported.

Are there any special warnings about Miralax?
Remember that Miralax is not for prolonged use. To promote regularity, make sure your diet includes plenty of fiber and fluids, and get regular exercise.
