What is Mupirocin and why is it prescribed? Mupirocin is prescribed for the treatment of impetigo, a bacterial infection of the skin. If the use of Mupirocin does not clear your skin infection within 3 to 5 days, or if the infection becomes worse, notify your doctor. How should you take Mupirocin? Follow your doctors directions for taking Mupirocin. Do not use Mupirocin more often or for longer than prescribed. Avoid contact with eyes. This drug is for external use only. If you miss a dose apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Store Mupirocin at room temperature. Are there any Mupirocin side effects? Mupirocin side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. More common Mupirocin side effects may include burning, pain, and stinging. Less common Mupirocin side effects may include itching. Rare Mupirocin side effects may include abnormal redness, dry skin, inflammation of the skin, nausea, oozing, skin rash, swelling, and tenderness. What are the possible food and drug interactions when taking Mupirocin? If Mupirocin is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Be sure to inform your doctor of all the prescription and over the counter medications you are taking. There are no known interactions. Are there any special warnings about Mupirocin? Continued or prolonged use of Mupirocin may result in the growth of bacteria that do not respond to this medication and can cause a secondary infection. Mupirocin is not intended for use in the eyes. If your skin shows signs of an allergic reaction or irritation, stop using Mupirocin and consult your doctor. |
