What is Mysoline and why is it prescribed? Mysoline is used to treat epileptic and other seizures. It can be used alone or with other anticonvulsant drugs. It is chemically similar to barbiturates. Mysoline should not be stopped suddenly. This could cause you to have seizures. If you no longer need the medication, your doctor will reduce the dosage gradually. How should you take Mysoline? Follow your doctors directions for taking Mysoline. Do not change from one manufacturer's product to another without consulting your doctor. If using Mysoline Suspension, shake well before using. If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. If it is within an hour of your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take two doses at the same time. Store Mysoline at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from light. Are there any Mysoline side effects? Mysoline side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. More common Mysoline side effects may include lack of muscle coordination and vertigo or severe dizziness. Less common Mysoline side effects may include double vision, drowsiness, emotional disturbances, excessive irritability, fatigue, impotence, loss of appetite, nausea, skin eruptions that resemble measles, uncontrolled movement of the eyeballs, and vomiting. What are the possible food and drug interactions when taking Mysoline? If Mysoline is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Be sure to inform your doctor of all the prescription and over the counter medications you are taking. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Mysoline with Antidepressants called MAO inhibitors (such as Parnate and Nardil), Blood-thinning drugs (such as Coumadin), Doxycycline (Doryx, Vibramycin), Estrogen-containing oral contraceptives (such as Ortho-Novum and Triphasil), Griseofulvin (Fulvicin-U/F, Grifulvin V), or Steroid drugs (such as Decadron). Avoid alcoholic beverages while you are taking Mysoline. Are there any special warnings about Mysoline? Remember that you must not stop taking Mysoline suddenly. It can take several weeks for the full effectiveness of Mysoline to be seen. Since Mysoline is generally given for long periods of time, your doctor will check your blood count every 6 months. |
