What is Olsalazine and why is it prescribed? Olsalazine is an anti-inflammatory drug used to maintain long-term freedom from symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Olsalazine is prescribed for people who cannot take sulfasalazine (Azulfidine). If you have kidney disease, Olsalazine could cause further damage. You will need regular checks on your kidney function, so be sure to keep all regular appointments with your doctor. How should you take Olsalazine? Follow your doctors directions for taking Olsalazine. Take Olsalazine for as long as your doctor has directed, even if you feel better. Take Olsalazine with food. If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at once. Store Olsalazine at room temperature. Are there any Olsalazine side effects? Olsalazine side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Diarrhea or loose stools are the most common side effects. Other Olsalazine side effects may include abdominal pain/cramping, bloating, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, heartburn, indigestion, inflammation of the mouth, insomnia, joint pain, light-headedness, loss of appetite, nausea, rectal bleeding, skin itching, skin rash, sluggishness, upper respiratory infection, vertigo, and vomiting. Rare cases of hepatitis have been reported in people taking Olsalazine. Symptoms may include aching muscles, chills, fever, headache, joint pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, and yellowish skin. What are the possible food and drug interactions when taking Olsalazine? If Olsalazine is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Be sure to inform your doctor of all the prescription and over the counter medications you are taking. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Olsalazine with warfarin (Coumadin). Are there any special warnings about Olsalazine? If diarrhea occurs, contact your doctor. |
