What is Penciclovir and why is it prescribed? Penciclovir cream is used to treat recurrent cold sores on the lips and face. Penciclovir works by interfering with the growth of the herpes virus responsible for the sores. You should begin applying Penciclovir at the first hint of a developing cold sore. Penciclovir will not cure herpes, but it will reduce pain and may speed healing. How should you take Penciclovir? Follow your doctors directions for taking Penciclovir. Avoid using Penciclovir cream in or near the eyes, it can irritate them. Apply it only to sores on the lips and face. If you miss a dose apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Store Penciclovir at room temperature. Avoid freezing. Are there any Penciclovir side effects? Penciclovir side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Penciclovir side effects may include headache, hives, itching, numbing of the skin, pain, rash, skin discoloration, skin reaction or swelling where the cream was applied, swelling in the mouth and throat, taste or smell alteration, tingling, and worsened condition. What are the possible food and drug interactions when taking Penciclovir? If Penciclovir is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Be sure to inform your doctor of all the prescription and over the counter medications you are taking. No interactions with Penciclovir cream have been reported. Are there any special warnings about Penciclovir? It is not known whether Penciclovir is effective for people with weak immune systems. |
