What is Phenazopyridine and why is it prescribed? Phenazopyridine is a urinary tract analgesic that helps relieve the pain, burning, urgency, frequency, and irritation caused by infection, trauma, catheters, or various surgical procedures in the lower urinary tract. Phenazopyridine is indicated for short-term use and can only relieve symptoms. It is not a treatment for the underlying cause of the symptoms. Phenazopyridine produces an orange to red color in urine, and may stain fabric. Staining of contact lenses has also been reported. How should you take Phenazopyridine? Follow your doctors directions for taking Phenazopyridine. If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take two doses at the same time. Store Phenazopyridine at room temperature. Are there any Phenazopyridine side effects? Phenazopyridine side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Phenazopyridine side effects may include headache, itching, rash, severe allergic reaction (rash, difficulty breathing, fever, rapid heartbeat, convulsions), and upset stomach. What are the possible food and drug interactions when taking Phenazopyridine? If Phenazopyridine is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Be sure to inform your doctor of all the prescription and over the counter medications you are taking. No interactions have been reported. Are there any special warnings about Phenazopyridine? If your skin or the whites of your eyes develop a yellowish tone, it may indicate that your kidneys are not eliminating the medication as they should. Notify your doctor immediately. If you are older, your doctor will watch you more closely, since the kidneys work less effectively as we age. |
